A century in Canberra’s story

The history of racing is weaved into the fabric of Canberra’s own development. Informal meetings were held as early as the 1860s and the Canberra Cup will celebrate 100 years in 2026. As our city has changed and grown, so have we.

1860s–1880s
Early informal meetings in the Canberra district.
Early 1920s
Acton Racecourse becomes the city’s first regular venue (site now beneath Lake Burley Griffin).
Jan 1925
Canberra Racing Club is formed.
Feb 1926
First Canberra Cup is run.
3 Nov 1962
New course opens at Lyneham (today’s Thoroughbred Park).
3 Oct 1971
Canberra pioneers Sunday racing in Australia.
1 Apr 1973
Inaugural Black Opal is held.
8 May 1988
Queen Elizabeth II opens the QEII Grandstand.
2 Jul 2001
Club becomes a Principal Club; 1 Jan 2003 rebrands to Canberra Racing Club / Thoroughbred Park.
2004–2007
Major facility upgrades (tracks, grandstand and amenities).
2020–2024
Canberra Carnival evolves; 2024 delivers the first $1m+ race day in Canberra.
2023
50 years of Black Opal celebrated; launch of Canberra Community Chest ($50k for 12 local partners).
2026
Centenary of the Canberra Cup.
